So, what’s the difference between the Baofeng Mini 5R and the new Mini 5i? The answer is not much at all. They are almost the same radio. There are a few minor differences to the keypad button layout, battery thickness and internal board, but not much else really. The circuit board in the Mini 5i has a newer date on it, so look at the Mini 5i as a slightly updated radio that has had a few minor updates that, other than the button layout and thickness of the new 5i, are not immediately noticeable to the end user.

Although there has been some talk about the Mini 5i being slightly better in airband reception, viewing some of the comparisons between the two models, I could not really see that much difference. A quick update while doing some more research. While there are conflicting reports amongst reviewers, some report an improvement in airband and some don’t, I have seen more comparisons and would actually come to the conclusion that the newer Mini 5i, or MKII as some people are calling it, does have better reception and sound clarity in airband than the Mini 5R.

But when it comes to the reception and sound quality in other frequencies, I could not hear much difference between them. Although, as with the airband, some people are reporting slightly better sound quality overall in the newer model. But other than in airband, which is bad in the 5R Mini, all other frequencies receive really well in both radios and sound good overall. They are great little radios for the price. Whichever one you choose should serve you well.

However, there is a price difference between the two models. Being the new kid on the block, the 5i is more expensive at this time. I’m sure that will change at some point. But as mentioned, one of the only advantages – though disputed by some users – found in the upgraded model is better airband reception. So, if airband is your thing buy the Mini 5i. If you’re not really bothered about listening to airband buy the cheaper 5R.
